The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has repelled two attacks in the directions of Idlib and Aleppo, the Syrian Ministry of Defense announced on March 27.
A “large number” of militant attacked under the cover of heavy rocket fire military sites near the town of Kafr Nabl in the southern Idlib countryside at the time of Iftar -the fast-breaking evening meal of Muslims in Ramadan at the afternoon- on March 26, the ministry said in a statement, adding that the attack was repelled by Syrian troops who killed and wounded dozens of military, destroyed their weapons and managed to capture some of their dead bodies.
The ministry also said that another attack was repelled by the SAA in the northern Aleppo countryside at around the same time, adding that a militant was captured alive.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights revealed that the attack on Kafr Nabl was carried out by the Amr bin Al-Aas Brigade, an elite formation of the al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) that rules of over Greater Idlib, a region that includes much of Idlib and nearby governorates. According to the London-based monitoring group, five militants of HTS and an SAA soldier were killed during the clashes near Kaf Nabl.
It is still unclear who launched the attack in the northern Aleppo countryside. HTS is active there, but much of that area is in the hands of the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army.
The attacks in Idlib and Aleppo were blatant violations of the ceasefire agreements on Greater Idlib and nearby Turkish-occupied areas, which were brokered by Russia and Turkey years ago.
HTS and its allies in Greater Idlib intensified attacks in recent months, provoking several rounds of retaliatory strikes by the SAA and the Russian military group in Syria. Despite recent escalation, the SAA and its allies will not likely launch a ground operation in the region any time soon as such a move could lead to a dangerous confrontation with Turkey who maintains large forces there.
