The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) launched a OTR-21 Tochka tactical ballistic missile at a unidentified target near the town of Benin in the southern Idlib countryside on April 26, a video released by the SMART News Agency revealed.
In the video, which shows a part of the missile engine, the pro-opposition news agency claims that the missile targeted a nearby refugee camp. However, no tents shown in the video appear to be damaged. Furthermore, the outlet itself confirmed that no civilian was killed in the missile attack.
The OTR-21 Tochka, which was first presented by the Soviet Union in the mid-70s, has a range between 70km and 185km depending on the variant. The missile is known for his high-accuracy, as it has a circular error probable (CEP) of less than 70m.
According to local sources, the missile used in the attack near Benin was armed with a cluster warhead. A military source told SouthFront that this variant is usually used to target the gatherings of terrorist groups, or their equipment, especially rocket launchers.
Several OTR-21 Tochka missile systems were deployed around Idlib in mid-2018. Since then, many missiles have been launched at terrorists’ positions in the governorate.
Why just one? Give them thousands!
Which variant is this? 1976–present (Scarab A) Operational range: 70 km (43 mi) – Accuracy: 150m. conv HE (1,063 lb) 1989–present (Scarab B) Operational range: 120 km (75 mi) – Mach 5.3) 1990–present (Scarab C) Operational range: 185 km (115 mi) – Mach 5.3) Tochka-P added passive radar against radar installations.
I dont think they know that yet.
“added passive radar”, i guess you mean it had a sensor making it an ARM/DEAD missile? Since putting an passive radar system in it, would require a transmitter to send the signal back to the operator and with the flight time in mind, it would be a pretty expensive missile to operate. A plane/helicopter/drone is much more effective at that job.
Targeted a refugee camp – yeah right. The jihadists that made it to Idlib from other parts of Syria in green buses are refugees indeed. Idlibstan granted them sanctuary but they have to live in tents, cos all the houses were already taken.
