The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) launched on January 17 a fresh ground attack in the southeastern Idlib countryside to recapture the town of Abu Jurayf.
A day earlier, the SAA captured the town from al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and its allies. However, terrorist groups recaptured the town in a counter-attack within a few hours, seizing loads of weapons which had been left behind by the army.
According to pro-government sources, intense artillery strikes are now targeting the terrorists inside Abu Jurayf and in its outskirt. The town is also being targeted by Syrian and Russian warplanes.
HTS’ news network, Iba’a, confirmed that heavy clashes are taking place around Abu Jurayf, with the SAA attempting to storm the town.
The army will likely recapture the town within a few hours bacause of the advantage in the fire power. HTS and its allies are reportedly sustaining heavy losses.
