Unexpectedly, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) launched a ground operation in the northern Hama countryside in the late hours of July 28.
Following a few hours of heavy clashes with Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and its allies, the army managed to recapture the key village of Tell Meleh and its hill top.
According to pro-government activists, the SAA is currently advancing towards the nearby village of Jibeen under the cover of intense Russian and Syrian airstrikes.

A coalition of HTS, Turkish-backed groups and al-Qaeda affiliated factions captured Jibeen and Tell Meleh in a surprise attack earlier this month. The SAA made two attempts to recapture the villages before. However, they failed.
If the army mange to recapture Jibeen, it may develop its ground operation and advance towards the nearby towns of al-Lataminah and Kafr Zita.

If they’ll respect Syrian sovereignty. Getting the Turks involved with Russian support would be a game changer for pushing the US out of NE Syria and the IAF out of Lebanese airspace. Upgrading the Syrian air force for joint Russian, Syrian, Turkish air patrols over Lebanon would be big help if the Lebanese will agree to it to stop IAF airspace violations.
The SAF isn’t capable of doing it itself. But with Turkish and Russian participation. That’s more than the IAF can handle.
Has even one of the towns the SAA have recently retaken been inhabited by anything more than the rebel fighters themselves, no not one. And all the towns the SAA have recaptured can’t even be caller towns anymore, they’re way too bombed out to be called towns now, they’re mostly just heaps of rubble that no longer have any, or very little strategic benefit at all. And in nearly all the areas the SAA have retaken towns in northern Hama, the local civilian populations had already agreed to, or were wanting to enter reconciliation talks with the Syrian government. By may last year nearly all the locals had agreed to stop supporting the Turkish backed rebels [FSA/NFL/SLF and others], and had finally decided to join the reconciliation process, but the rebels had other ideas and promptly captured and killed some of the most vocal reconciliation proponents. That stopped the reconciliation process in its tracks but it also increased the animosity the civilian population held towards the Turkish supported rebel groups. Is it a coincidence that the locals in northern Hama, who abandoned their support for the Turkish backed rebels in favour of joining the reconciliation process with Assad, had the rebels they were abandoning replaced by HTS fighters. HTS is a designated terrorist organization according to Turkish law and not officially supported by Turkey in any way [unofficially it’s a different matter], but they supposedly kicked out all the Turkish supported fighters [legal opposition groups according to the Astana agreement], and took their places in just a few months of infighting. That left all the illegal groups [according to Astana] like HTS and Al Nusra, in charge of all the areas where the civilian population last year had been wanting to switch sides. I don’t think it’s a coincidence at all, I think Erdogan orchestrated the whole thing.

Putin and Assad were opposed to the “separation of the moderate opposition”, it was Erdogan who wanted to reorganize the rebels. Erdogan placed all the untainted rebel groups in the legal opposition groups [according to the Astana agreement], but left all the tainted rebel groups [known murderers and rapists], in HTS Al Nusra and a few other smaller factions, [illegal according to the Astana agreement], in other words I think he just reshuffled the deckchairs. HTS [10 to 12,000 fighters] and Al Nusra [20,000 fighters] ousted all the Turkish supported and legal opposition groups [at least 40,000 fighters] and took over more than 60% of Idlib, and Erdogan didn’t lift a finger to help his own proxies the NFL, FSA and SLF. but now all those legal Turkish opposition groups that HTS and Al Nusra kicked out of Idlib, are all coming back to help them defend it against the SAA, another one of Erdogan’s shenanigans I’d say. Erdogan moved about 20,000 of those legal opposition fighters that were stationed in Idlib to Aleppo, and then promptly redesignated them as Euphrates shield opposition fighters, so now he has a strong army in east Aleppo he can use to confront the Kurds, and the rest of his forces are in the north eastern parts of Idlib and west Aleppo [helping HTS protect the territory HTS stole from them]. And it’s no coincidence HTS and Al Nusra are stationed where they are, conveniently deployed to create a buffer zone between Erdogan’s legal opposition forces in Idlib and the SAA who surround them. I seem to see Erdogan’s fingerprints on nearly everything now. I think Assad’s trying to speed things up a bit now [and dragging Putin along for the ride], I think his patience for Putin and Erdogan’s geostrategic relationship has finally run out [thankfully]. And Assad doesn’t have all the time in the world either, he has to make a start on regaining all the US held territory [politically], and he can’t do that until the rebels in Idlib are dealt with, and the longer the US controlled autonomous zone remains in existence, the more people will accept it as a reality, just as they do the Kurdish autonomous region in Iraq.
