On January 20, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA), the Tiger Forces and Hezbollah fully secured the strategic Abu Duhur airbase in the eastern Idlib countryside after they entered it earlier on the same day, according to the Hezbollah media wing in Syria.
The source added that the SAA also recaptured the villages and hills of Zifr Segir, Zifr Kebir, Dabshiyah, Tell Salmu Janoubi, Rasm Abed and Buwaytiyah south and southwest of the Abu Duhur airbase from Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).
Prior to launching their final attack on the Abu Duhur airbase, the SAA units in southwestern Aleppo reached the positions of the Tiger Forces east of the airbase after capturing Umm Tinah village. This maneuver allowed the SAA and its allies to storm the airbase form the southern and eastern directions simultaneously.
From its side, HTS and its allies launched another counter-attack against the SAA southwest of the Abu Duhur airbase and captured the villages of Suruj and Rubay’ah, according to the HTS-linked news agency Iba’a. The source also reported that HTS targeted a key position of the SAA in Suruj with a VBIED during the first phase of the counter attack.

The new counter-attack of HTS will likely fail like the previous ones, as the SAA and its allies deployed large forces in southern Idlib to repel such attacks. However, if HTS advances further, it may open a route that will allow ISIS fighters to escape from their pocket in the northeastern Hama countryside.

The front forged by SAA is ingenious. A double narrow corridor to launch massive blows from multiple directions, while still giving the terrorists the illusion they may just make it through. Clever strategy.
It is one thing to make it appear a weak side; but a completely different to actually make it weak. 100 men captured alive; 100+ KIA; others outflanked, being run over by enemy vehicles. The same shit happened during the summer in Ghanim al Ali, where front was weakened to coax the enemy into attacking there; with horrendous loss of life. AD campaign cost way too much, especially when you consider that militants withdrew from most villages w/o resistance. If it weren’t for the 124th advancing from the north; it would have been a miserable failure.
Ummm thats normal in every major offensive. Both rebels / isis / alqaeda and saa have tens of thousands of expendible soldiers coming from all corners of the middle east constantly being resupplied. It is what it is, huge loss of life but thats war

SAA have to really dig in in that middle area that’s exposed to the north and south. Reinforce that area and the surrounding areas as best as possible.

Shortening the front lines is a good idea. Honest question, I’m wondering myself- Is it more wise to continue to grow the SAA bridging the gap or leave the illusion of it being vulnerable?
The SAA force NE of the the airbase is still on the move to the west which is increasing the bridge. It may be more important to have a second solid line of supply to the Tiger front. It appears ISIS did not want to leave the south pocket anyways, or where they to slow to get out? Start collapsing the pocket from the east flank I think. It may be a tough fight.

If ISIS can be concentrated they can be easily targeted, but it is good to have them fighting HTS.
Hahahaha ISIS isn’t fighting HTS, at least not in Idlib. The reason why ISIS grew in the province is because a HTS faction defected and joined ISIS instead. While HTS Doesn’t like that, they accepted ISIS and has already evacuated from the pocket into Idlib city while ISIS remains in the pocket. The SAA should now take advantage of this and launch massive blitz campaign from the air and destroy ISIS defences but instead, use it as a manuver to launch a mammouth attack into Idlib as HTS (FSA) has sent reinforcement to Afrin operation.
In a way, the Kurds are taking the heat for the Southern Idlib operation to roll up more easily. The Kurds have the benefit of massive planned defense on their side, so that’s good.
The reason ISIS is there is due to their offensive on the highway (which they later crossed because of the SAA letting them) during the Deir ez Zor offensive. ISIS recruited members easily in the southern Aleppo / Idlib due to their similarities in ideology but also because of the former Jund al Aqsa rebel group who was active in this region. Also, HTS was scared of getting besieged which resulted in them fleeing and a few members of them joining ISIS ranks. ISIS simply took over these towns and villages without a fight just like SAA did in southern Aleppo in the mountain area.

I will just put it out there, don’t be surprised if ISIS pops up elsewhere in Idlib. SAA seems to use the vile that were sent against them to their own use. Maybe the deal was to look after their families while they fulfilled their Jihad. Regardless, everything ended in the Aleppo offensive Nov-Dec 2016, with the intel that SAA has right now, it would be hard (impossible) to stop them on their own territory.
