At least 17 militants were killed by anti-personnel mines, which had been planted by Syrian Arab Army (SAA) units in the town of Kafr Nabudah in the northern Hama countryside, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) revealed on May 22.
“They [the casualties] passed through a mind field that was planted by regime forces before withdrawing from the town,” the monitoring group’s report reads.
Most of the causalities were reportedly fighters of Jaysh al-Izza, the previously US-backed group, which is one of the close allies of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).
A coalition of al-Qaeda-affiliated groups and Turkish-backed factions, led by HTS, captured Kafr Nabudah in the noon of May 22, after more than 12 hours of heavy clashes with the SAA.
The fall of the town into hands of militants became a rare achievement by HTS and its allies. However, it apparently came with a very heavy price, as their loses continue to surface.
