Syrian Army Neutralized Idlib Militant Group That Violated Ceasefire

In a blatant violation of the ceasefire in Greater Idlib, radical militants attacked on March 19 morning positions of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in the southern part of the region.

According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the attack, which targeted several military positions in the outskirt of the town of Hizareen, was quickly repelled. Army units neutralized all the militants on the spot.

“The militants’ attack was foiled after many of them were killed or wounded, army units chased their withdrawing remnants deep into Idlib’s [southern] countryside,” the state-run agency’s reporter said.

The Al-Qaeda-affiliated “Wa Harid al-Muminin” operations room claimed responsibility for the attack. In an officail statement, it claimed that 15 Syrian soldiers were killed or injured in the attack. However, these claims appear to be baseless.

It remains unclear if the Turkish military, which maintains many observation posts in southern Idlib, was aware of the militants’ attack.

The Hizareen attack was a serious violation on the ceasefire regime, which had been agreed by Russia and Turkey earlier this month. Such provocations could lead to a new military confrontation in the region.
