On December 21, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) artillery and rocket launchers shelled several towns in the northern Hama countryside and the southern Idlib countryside, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).

The pro-opposition monitoring group said the shelling targeted the towns of al-Lataminah, Maarkaba, Abu Raida, Arbain, Hisraya, al-Sakhr, and Kafr Zita in northern Hama and the towns of Sukayk and Jarjnaz in southern Idlib.

According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the artillery and rocket strikes, which targeted positions of the Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP) and other radical groups, were a response to the recent violations of the Russian-Turkish demilitarized zone agreement.

“The strikes killed and injured terrorists and destroyed their equipment, weapons and fortified positions,” the SANA said in a press release.

Two days ago, eleven Syrian service members were killed, when a Turkish-backed group launched an attack on their position from inside the demilitarized zone. The attack was another example of how Turkey ignores the repeated violations of the agreement.
