The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and its allies reached the key area of Qabr al-Sheikh Hassan in the framework of their military operation against the remaining fighters of ISIS in the eastern al-Suwayda countryside, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported on June 22.

The Syrian al-Suwayda 24 blog said that the SAA lost seven soldiers and killed nine fighters of ISIS in the last 24 hours. SAA soldiers also captured more than thirty motorcycles and heavy weapons from ISIS.

During its advance in the eastern al-Suwayda countryside, the SAA also uncovered a network of tunnels of ISIS. The National Defense Forces (NDF) said that ISIS cells had used these tunnels to hide and to smuggle weapons.

Earlier, the SAA captured the areas of Qus Abu Jabal and Tell Mughir north of the area of Khirbat al-Umbashi in the eastern al-Suwayda countryside after successfully splitting the ISIS pocket there.

The SAA and its allies have cleared 4,500km in the eastern al-Suwayda countryside from ISIS cells, since the beginning of their security operation, according to the SANA. The SAA mission there will likely end within a few weeks, if not days.

ISIS and their Armchair Commanders in Riyadh, London, Paris, Washington, Jeddah & Jerusalem won’t be happy about this

Icarus Tanović

Wow, thise gotta be using some construction equipment for this.

Bill Wilson

Nah. Those have been there for centuries. Local inhabitants would dig tunnels out of soft rock to store foodstuffs, to hide in during wars, keep livestock in at night and to house caravans. I would imagine that the desert south of Palmyra is chock full of ancient tunnels that were used by smugglers trying to avoid paying taxes

Then for what the bloody sake SAA captured three or two months ago? That drilling mining machine with diamond cuttin edges. And remember that almost eruption, not even explosion right in front of Syrian army head quarters.

Xanatos

There are many ancient tunnels and caves in syria. It’s been occupied for over 30,000 years. Many were still being used as homes by rural occupants before the war started. The same as turkey.

Icarus Tanović

You must have laugh on this, have you?

Bill Wilson

I’m sure the SAA will find more ancient tunnel systems being used by ISIS in that desert. New ones are easy to spot from space since the spoil distributed outside will have a different color than what’s been weathering on the ground’s surface.

Not surprising, long term clandestine actions and/or siege style infiltrations call for such things. The Vietcong and Hamas used them for the same reasons (of course those are totally different wars).

Orcs sure do like tunneling and digging. Soon they will be digging new chambers for Shaitan!
