The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) recaptured many positions in southeastern Idlib, which were lost earlier to terrorist groups, in a rapid counter-attack.

According to pro-government sources, the SAA launched its counter-attack in the afternoon of January 8. Within a few hours, the army re-imposed control of the towns of Delim, Barsah and Samkeh.

The towns were captured in the morning by al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and its allies, which include Turkish-backed militants.

Sources close to the SAA’s 25th Special Forces Division, previously known as the Tiger Forces, claimed that HTS and its allies lost a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) and three other vehicles during their attack.

Meanwhile, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) documented the death of at least 12 members of the militant groups.

HTS and its allies launched their attack taking advantage of bad weather conditions, which grounded both Syrian and Russian warplanes.

The weather in Greater Idlib is expected to improve in 48 hours. The SAA may resume its ground operations in the southeastern part of the region once this happen.
