Syrian Army Reinforces Troops Around ISIS-Infested Town In Daraa

On September 1, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) deployed addition troops around the town of Jasim in the western Daraa countryside, where a number of suspected ISIS members are reportedly taking shelter.

The army deployed troops around the town earlier this week in a step meant to prevent wanted suspects from fleeing. The addition reinforcements included more than 100 personnel and several vehicles. They were brought in from a military base located in the nearby hill of al-Jabiyah.

Aside from the troops deployed around the town, SAA drones have ben conducting reconnaissance missions over Jasim and its outskirts nonstop.

The Horan Free League said that Syrian authorities have not handed any demands to the locals in Jasim, yet. The movements of civilians from and to the town is still normal.

The SAA deployment may be meant to support an upcoming intelligence operation against ISIS members in Jasim. In August, the SAA provided support to two operations in the towns of Adawan and Tafas in the western Daraa countryside. ISIS general leader in southern Syria, Abu Salem al-Iraqi, and its top military commander in the region, Abu Omar Al-Jababi, were killed as a result of the said operations.

ISIS managed to expand its influence in Daraa in the last few years without being noticed. The terrorist group relied mainly on the support of radical opposition supporters in the governorate. Now, Syrian government forces are working to address this threat.
