Al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and the Turkistan Islamic Party have launched four attacks from the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib against the Syrian Arab Army (SAA), Captain 1st Rank Oleg Ignasyuk, deputy chief of the Russian Center for Reconciliation in Syria announced on November 20.
In his daily briefing, the Russian military official said that three of the attacks took place in the countryside of Idlib and the other was in the Aleppo countryside.
The official also reported that the SAA foiled an infiltration attempt by the terrorist groups close to the town of Urum al-Sughra in the western countryside of Aleppo. The terrorists were pushed back and Syrian troops didn’t take any losses, he said.
Just two days earlier, the Syrian Ministry of Defense said that the SAA shot down 15 drones launched by terrorist groups over the countryside of Idlib and Aleppo.
Most of the downed drones were commercially-available quadcopters, either armed with small unguided munitions or modified for FPV suicide attacks. Few others were locally-made fixed-wing suicide drones which are usually used in attacks behind the front.
The attacks in Greater Idlib came following reports of a plan by HTS and its allies to launch a large-scale offensive against the SAA in order to take advantage of the distraction caused by the ongoing Israeli war on both the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.
In addition, Russian intelligence warned recently that the secret services of the Kiev regime were active in the region, providing arms to HTS and recruiting terrorists to fight in Ukraine.
The SAA and its allies have been taking measures to deter the terrorist group. Last month, the Russian Aerospace Forces carried out several waves of strikes against targets in Greater Idlib. The army also deployed some of its elite units along the front with the region.
