The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) repelled an attack by militants in the Aleppo direction, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced on March 29, only a few hours after dozens were killed in the governorate as a result of strikes blamed on Israel.
The attack targeted military sites in the western Aleppo countryside and was carried out by militants from the al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra Front, now known as Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the ministry said in a statement, adding that Syrian troops killed or wounded all the militants, who included foreigners from HTS’ Turkistan unit, and captured some of their dead bodies.

The ministry didn’t specify where the attack took place. However, Syrian pro-government news sources reported heavy clashes near the town of Urum al-Sughra in the western Aleppo countryside. The sources also said that a soldier was killed while repelling the attack.
“[The attack] came in conjunction with the Israeli air aggression against the Aleppo countryside, an attempted drone attack by terrorists on civilians in the city of Aleppo, and an attack by groups affiliated with the terrorist organization ISIS on some of our positions in the vicinity of Palmyra,” the ministry said in its statements.
More than 40 civilians and military personnel, including fighters from Lebanon’s Hezbollah, were killed in a series of Israeli strikes that targeted Aleppo city as well as military sites in the southern and western countryside of the governorate in the early morning.
HTS and its allies, who control much of Idlib governorate and nearby areas in Lattakia, Hama and Aleppo, stepped up their attacks on nearby government-held areas in recent months in what appears to be an attempt to take advantage of the distraction caused by the war in the Palestinian Gaza Strip and the resulting Israeli escalation against Syria.
On March 27, the SAA killed or wounded zones of the military while repelling two attacks in the southern Idlib countryside and the western Aleppo countryside.
The militants’ recent attacks were a blatant violation of a ceasefire agreement brokered by Russia and Turkey more than three years ago. The response of the SAA and its allies, namely the Russian military, will likely be fierce.
