The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) repelled an attack that targeted one of its positions in the northern Lattakia countryside, the Syrian Ministry of Defense announced on March 3.
“A unit of our armed forces operating in the direction of the northern countryside of Lattakia confronted a terrorist group that attempted to infiltrate one of our military positions. It was able to kill and wound most of the group’s members and retrieve the bodies of three of the dead terrorists,” the ministry said in a statement posted on its official Facebook page.
The ministry also released photos showing the dead bodies of some of the militants who were killed during the failed attack.
The attack was reportedly carried out on March 2 by one of the elite units of al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the de-facto ruler of the Greater Idlib region that includes some areas of the northern Lattakia countryside.
During the attack, HTS militants attempted to storm a key position of the SAA located on one of the peaks of Mount Nahshabba.

The attack took place as warplanes of the Russian Aerospace Forces were attacking positions of HTS and its allies in the northern Lattakia countryside and the western countryside of Idlib. The SAA was also targeting militants near the front line in the northwestern countryside of Hamas and the southern countryside of Idlib using FPV suicide drones at the time.
In recent months, HTS and its allies stepped up attacks from Greater Idlib on nearby government-held areas in a blatant violation of a ceasefire agreement that was brokered by Russia and Turkey more than three years ago.
Despite recent escalation in Greater Idlib, the SAA and its allies will not likely launch a ground operation in the region any time soon as this could lead to a dangerous confrontation with Turkey who maintains large forces there.
