Late on February 6, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) repelled a large-scale attack on its newly-established positions in the southern Idlib countryside.
Al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and its Turkish-backed allies launched the large attack in the afternoon. Opposition sources claimed that the Turkish military’s artillery provided the militants with support. However, this is yet to be verified.
Muraselon, a pro-government outlet, said that the SAA maintained all of its positions in the towns of Dadik and Nayrab, the main targets of the failed attack. A military source told the news outlet that dozens of militants were killed during the clashes.
Syrian and Russian warplanes reportedly chased the militants withdrawing from the battlefield, targeting them as well as their equipment.

HTS and its allies launched attack a few hours after losing Saraqib city. The attack was likely an attempt to absorb the anger of their supporters after their repeated defeats.
The SAA will most likely resume its advance along the M5 highway in the upcoming few hours. The army’s next target is likely the town of al-Eis in southwest Aleppo. The army could also advance towards the town of Sarmin to reach the southern entrance of Idlib city.

SAA must now consolidate. They advanced rapidly over the last several days. Now, we must expect several counterattacks from the Turkish terrorists. Most likely scenario is a jihadists will lunch several waves of Battalion sized formations. When they assume one third casualties, they will stop their attack. In the meantime, the Russian and Syrian airspace forces must hit convoys and punish jihadists who are moving around Idlib.
SAA should advance further on the eastern portion of the M5 highway, near Aleppo. the rebels will likely be pulling troops from peripheral positions in order to protect Idlib. This situation creates both an opportunity to bid those groups while in transit, as well as for the SAA to make progress in areas that were previously will fortified.
I also think it is wise for the SAA to press jihadist on the eastern side of the M5 Highway. A arger buffer zone must be created on the west side of the highway in order to make it useful. At this point the purpose of taking territory from the jihadists must be to decrease the size of the active front line in order to concentrate troops were there needed.

So what will actually happen in Syria if Turkey does practically go to war against the SAA, and the Russians for whatever reason don’t do much to intervene, any guesses. For one that 65 to 90,000 opposition and terrorist forces in Idlib will grow, voluntary recruits and conscripts will swell their ranks with Turkey’s assistance. All the foreign Jihadists that’ve fled over the last 18 months will return thanks to knowing Turkey’s actually committed to supporting them to the bitter end this time, so their ranks will grow too. Morale will grow amongst the anti Assad population strengthening their resolve and commitment politically. Isis will be able to take advantage of the Turkish hostilities and operate in Syria more freely than they do . And the so called moderate opposition will be much more persuasive when lobbying the UN for more support to allow annexation of Syria to form an independant or Turkish administered state, similar to what the Kurds and US have done in northern Syria. And of course it’s also contribute to ongoing problems with the Kurds, not just the US supported SDF, I mean the whole Kurdish population, once they become involved in the direct fighting there’ll be no minimising civilian casualties like the SAA and the Russians do, the Kurdish gloves will come off and the Kurds in general will do to the Turks what the ALF Kurds already do, kill them and anybody else that happens to be nearby at every opportunity. Syria could become a bloodbath very quickly thanks to Turkish military efforts, forget about the early days with Isis and foreign Jihadists, they’ll be like the good old days, with the terrorist on the ground and the Turks providing covering fire the poor old SAA will have a hard time stopping them now, we all better hope and pray the Russians do something to stop them, if they don’t or can’t do anything positive things are about to go to crap very quickly.

We should’ve avoided antagonizing Erdogan until we really had to, attacking the north prematurely has brought things to a head way too quickly, we still have a huge front to protect and our enemies are already positioned amongst our troops and growing in numbers, I see this as a recipe for disaster more than an omen of good fortune. So everything depends on how hard the Russians push back against Turkey, and if they do push back but push too hard, will it then escalate to a wider conflict. Israel is known to love picking on defenseless enemies who cant strike back, equipping the SyAAD with S-300 in Damascus and giving them export SU-30 will help the issue without having Russia deploy their own S-400 in Damascus or setup another major airbase (extremely expensive). The way things are going now Israel will continue to strike. Syria’s 1960’s SAM and 1970’s era radars are just not advanced enough.
It appears that HTS is trying to block a SAA advance on Ariha, which is a vital highway junction.
