The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) repelled early on November 16 a counter-attack launched by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and its Turkish-backed allies in the southeastern Idlib countryside.
Pro-government sources said that the terrorist group and its allies attempted to recapture the hill of Khaznah in the early morning. However, army units managed to repel the attack following several hours of heavy clashes.
According to the sources, al-Qaeda-affiliated HTS and its allies sustained heavy losses in the failed attack. The terrorist group has not commented on the matter, so far.
The SAA, backed by the Russian Aerospace Forces, captured Khaznah hill and the town of Luwaybidah two days ago in a limited ground operation.
The SAA could launch a wider ground offensive in southeastern Idlib in the upcoming few days. Russian warplanes are conducting intense airstrikes on the region on a daily basis.
