On September 18, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) entered the town of Tafas in the western Daraa countryside under a reconciliation agreement that was accepted by the locals two days ago.

Army units were accompanied by a force from the Russian Military Police, which will oversee the implementation of the reconciliation agreement.

Under the agreement, the SAA will reestablish a number of positions inside and around Tafas. The army will also carry out a combing operation in the town in order to uncover any hidden weapons, ammunition or explosives.

Gunmen in Tafas appear to be pleased by the agreement. In the first few hours following the deployed of the SAA in the town, at least 310 local gunmen handed over their arms and joined the reconciliation process. The number will likely rise in the upcoming few days.

Tafas was the third town to reach a reconciliation agreement with Syrian authorities this month. The first town was al-Yadudah and the second was Muzayrib. These agreements were made possible thanks to the success of the recent reconciliation agreement in Daraa al-Balad, the southern part of Daraa city.

The reconciliation process in the western Daraa countryside is far from over. More towns and villages will likely reach deals with Syrian authorities before the end of the month.
