The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) had established a joint operations room in the towns of Manbij and Ayn al-Arab, also known as Kobane, in the northern and northeastern countryside of Syria’s Aleppo, the UNews Press Agency reported on July 10 citing Kurdish media sources.
According to the news outlet, the joint operations room was established by the SAA and the SDF to coordinate against any new Turkish military operation in Syria.
In coordination with the SDF, the SAA will deploy large reinforcements, including heavy weapons, near Manbij and step up its presence along the border line to the north of Kobane.
The Turkish military and its proxies have been making preparations for a new operation against the SDF in northern and northeastern Syria since May.
Speaking during a recent visit to a base on the Turkey’s border with Iraq border, the Turkish National Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said the Turkish military is ready for a new operation in Syria and the order to start it can be given at any time. The minister stressed that Ankara will not cancel or postpone its military plans.
The SAA and the SDF have been working to improve their coordination for a while now. In June, it was revealed that Kurdish, pro-government and Iranian-backed formations had established a joint operations room called the “North Thunderbolt” in the village of Hardatnin in the northern countryside of Aleppo to coordinate against Turkey.
Despite the recent steps by the SAA and the SDF, Turkey appears to be determined to go with its military plans. Ankara is clearly willing to risk a new military confrontation with Damascus.
