On August 7 morning, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) shelled Idlib city, the largest urban center in the northwestern region of Greater Idlib.
The army targeted the western outskirts of the city, where many positions of al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) are located. The terrorist group is the de-facto ruler of Greater Idlib. No civilian losses were reported.
Opposition sources revealed that the SAA fired at least four Russian-made Krasnopol 155 mm artillery rounds at the area.
Most 152 mm artillery guns can fire the 2K25 Krasnopol that is guided by a semi-active laser. The round has a range of 20 km and can hit its targets, which can be illuminated from the ground or the air, with pinpoint accuracy.
The artillery strike was likely an initial response to HTS’ violations of the ceasefire agreement in Greater Idlib, which was brokered by Russia and Turkey last year.
A day earlier, six service members of the SAA, including two officers, were killed and six others were wounded when Uzbek terrorists of HTS raided their post in the southern countryside of Idlib. The raid was a blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement.
The SAA and its allies, especially the Russian Aerospace Forces, will likely carry out more strikes on Greater Idlib in the upcoming few hours in order to punish HTS for its recent attacks.
