On September 2, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) 88th Brigade shot down an armed unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) over the area of al-Masharie of the al-Ghab Plains in the northwestern Hama countryside, according to Syrian pro-government sources.
Experts said that the UAV, which was armed with six unguided small-diameter projectiles, is similar to the ones which were used by “unknown” militants to target Russia’s Hmeimim airbase on several occasions over the last two months.
Last week, the SAA shoot down a UAV of the same type over the town of al-Suqaylabiyah in the northern Hama countryside. Back then, the UAV also failed to cause any damage.
According to Syrian pro-government activists, the former branch of al-Qaeda in Syria, Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) is launching these UAVs from its remaining positions in the northwestern Hama countryside and the northern Lattakia countryside. Currently, the SAA and its allies are preparing to attack these positions.
