In the afternoon of March 27, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) shot down an armed unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), which was flying over its positions in the northern Hama countryside, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
Syrian pro-government activists released a photo of the downed UAV. The photo’s quality is low. However, the UAV appears to be identical to the type used in previous attacks on the Russian Hmeimim airbase during the last year.
This was the third armed UAV of this type, which was shot down this month. The first drone was shot down over northern Lattakia on March 15. Two days later, the second one was downed over the same region.
According to pro-government sources, Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) [the former branch of al-Qaeda] is responsible for building and operating these armed UAVs.
The upcoming hours will likely witness a military response from the SAA and the Russian Aerospace Forces as it was after the previous drone attacks.
