The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) shot down late on January 8 an armed drone over the northwestern countryside of Hama.
According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the small unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was brought down in the outskirt of the town of Asilah. The town is located more than 25 km away from the frontlines with Greater Idlib.
The drone appears to be identical to the type used in previous attacks on SAA positions in northern Hama and southern Idlib.

Al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) is reportedly manufacturing and operating these DIY armed drones in Greater Idlib. Some reports claim that Turkey and even the U.S. are behind the group’s alleged drone program.
Earlier today, HTS and its allies launched an attack in southeast Idlib. The terrorist groups failed to advance. However, they captured many heavy weapons from SAA positions.
Facing these provocations, the army may resume its ground operations in Greater Idlib in the coming days. The weather in the region is expected to clear up within 48 hours.
