In response to recent violations of the Russian-Turkish demilitarized zone agreement, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) launched a barrage of rockets at Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) positions in the town of Saraqib near the center of Idlib province on February 22.
“The strikes destroyed several positions and headquarters, killed and injured many terrorists and destroyed some of their weapons and vehicles,” a reporter of the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) said.
Saraqib is one of the key strongholds of HTS in the province of Idlib. According to the SANA, several headquarters and ammo depots of the radical group are located within the town, which oversees several key roads leading to the cities of Idlib, Aleppo and Hama.
In the last two weeks, HTS and its allies violated the demilitarized zone agreement dozens of times by attacking residential areas in Aleppo and Hama. One civilian was killed and many others were injured as a result of these violations.
Russia and Turkey agreed on new steps to reinforce the demilitarized zone around Idlib during a recent presidential summit in the Russian city of Sochi. However, none of these steps have been implemented so far, which leaves the door open for a military solution.
About time, well done SAA.
