On October 23, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) targeted the town of Kansafra in the southern Idlib countryside with more than 200 rockets and shells.
The SAA’s intense shelling resulted in significant material damage. Nevertheless, no human loses were reported by any credible sources.
Kansafra is largely abandoned. Most of the town’s locals were displaced earlier this year when the SAA approached the al-Zawiya Mount. The town is now occupied by militants of al-Qaeda-affilated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham. Fortified positions and command centers were established inside the town and around it.
The SAA’s intense strikes on Kansafra were most likely a response to the militants’ repeated violations of the March 5 agreement, which was brokered by Russia and Turkey.
Turkey is now withdrawing its troops from posts besieged by the SAA while working to reinforce its positions in the al-Zawiya Mount.
The situation in Greater Idlib is far from stable. A serious escalation may start at any time. The Damascus government and its allies don’t believe that Ankara is honoring the commitments it made under the March 5 agreement.

Assad fights separatists and other armed criminal gangs. Now these gangs are concentrated in this area. When law and order is restored, hopefully many refugees will return to Syria. If they have not then got a taste of a more civilized way of life in Europe.
