During a series of search operations in the recently liberated areas in the governorates of Daraa, Homs and Damascus, the Syria Arab Army (SAA) uncovered loads of weapons, some of which had been made in the U.S.
A Syrian officer who oversaw the operations told the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) on January 27 that the cooperation of the locals allowed the army to uncover many weapons caches, which were carefully hidden.
The seized weapons included:
- Seven Bulgarian and Soviet-made Konkurs anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) and a launcher;
- Four Bulgarian and Soviet-made Fagot ATGMs;
- Six US-made TOW ATGMs;
- A Yugoslav-made M79 Osa anti-tank weapon along with several rounds;
- An SPG-9 73mm recoilless gun with several rounds;
- Two Grad 122mm rockets;
- Several Russian-made MRO-A and RPO-A thermobaric rocket launchers;
- Several US-made M72 LAW anti-tank rocket-propelled grenades;
- Several Russian-made RPG-22 and RPG-18 anti-tank rocket-propelled grenades;
- Loads of ammunition and many machine guns of different calibers.
Most of these weapons were supplied by the U.S. and its allies to the Free Syrian Army (FSA) under a “train and equip” program which had been authorized by former U.S. President Barack Obama in 2014. The program was halted by President Donald Trump in 2017. However, most of the weapons found its way to the black market or even to the hands of terrorist groups.

It is not laziness but these caches are found after house to house searches that take a lot of manpower. The heahchoppers dug 15 kms of underground tunnels and rat holes in Douma and Daraa alone. The SAA has better things to do now as the terrorists have been defeated and fled from these regions in green buses with photos of Assad on the windscreens. However, many more of these hidden CIA supplied arms depots will be uncovered. Imagine the haul in Idlib, when that is liberated.
Yes, combing hundreds of square miles that includes many towns and villages is a Herculean task and I am sure that weapons will continue to be found for generations. A friend of mine found a Brengun in perfect condition ,wrapped in grease paper during the late 1960’s and another friend found two Webley 38 pistols in good condition from WW2 buried under an old greenhouse floor in the late 1970’s with ammunition.
Bren gun was a good weapon even though the magazine held less rounds than a current AK. Yes, any good quality firearm if stored properly can be used after a century even as Afghans with their 19th century 303 caliber Lee Enfields have shown. It has hell of kick though, fired one years ago and even as a young man felt the recoil.
The bren held 32 rounds of 303 in a curved mag and the same in the 7.62 rimless calibre, but in a straight mag. It was common practice to load with 30 rounds to prevent jamming if my memory is correct.
The Bren as a very accurate weapon as well, that can be a disadvantage when laying down ‘suppressive fire’.
