On March 24, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) carried out a series of artillery strikes on the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib.
The artillery strikes targeted positions of al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) in the outskirts of the town of Takad in the western countryside of Aleppo. HTS is the de-facto ruler of Greater Idlib.
According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the SAA’s strikes killed a fighter of HTS and wounded several others.
The SAA artillery strikes were likely a response to recent violations of the ceasefire in Greater Idlib, which was brokered by Russia and Turkey more than two years ago. HTS and its allies carried out several indirect fire attacks on army positions in the southern Idlib countryside and the western countryside of Aleppo in the last few days. The attacks didn’t result in any casualties.
Despite some ceasefire violations by HTS and its allies, the situation in Greater Idlib have been calm for well over a month now.
HTS has been taking advantage of the somehow stable situation to strengthen its security and economic grip over Greater Idlib. Turkey, who maintains a fairly large force in the region, has been doing nothing to limit the terrorist group’s influence or to force it to respect the ceasefire.
