On August 23, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) carried out a series of artillery strikes on the northwestern region of Greater where several terrorist groups are present and active.
The artillery strikes targeted militants’ positions in the southern Idlib countryside and the western countryside of Aleppo. Four militants were killed and several others were wounded as a result of the strike.
Three of the slain militants were low-ranking members of al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the de-facto ruler of Greater Idlib, while the fourth one was a field commander of the al-Izza Army.
Just a day earlier, a wave of 14 Russian airstrikes hit the western outskirts of Idlib city, where several headquarters, ammunition depots and training camps of HTS are known to be located. The strikes caused heavy material damage. However, no casualties were reported.
The Syrian and Russian strikes on Greater Idlib were likely just a response to recent ceasefire violations by HTS and its allies.
The ceasefire in Greater Idlib, which was brokered by Russia and Turkey more than two years ago, is still holding up. However, the situation in the region today is far from being stable. This will not likely change any time soon. The SAA and its allies will not apparently resume their operations in Greater Idlib before reaching an agreement with Turkey, who maintains a large military presence in the region.
