On September 30, Syria’s newly-appointed Consul to Saudi Arabia, Ihsan Ramman, arrived in the Kingdom’s capital, Riyadh, and visited the Syrian Embassy in the city.

In a statement upon arriving, Rumman said that “the embassy in Riyadh is a home for all Syrians and will serve all the members of the Syrian community in Saudi Arabia.”

“We are working and striving to work as quickly as possible to open the doors of the embassy to receive our citizens and provide them with the best services related to consular matters and passports,” the consul added, according to the Syrian Al-Watan newspaper.

Syrian media reported that Damascus will appoint Assistant Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Ayman Sousan, as its ambassador to Saudi Arabia in the near future.

Preparations are currently ongoing for the reopening of the Saudi Embassy in Damascus. The two countries will also resume direct flights.

Saudi Arabia and Syria announced last May that work would resume at their respective diplomatic missions in Riyadh and Damascus, officially ending the disagreement that began after the outbreak of the war in Syria in 2011. The surprise rapprochement facilitated Syria’s return to the Arab League.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was then invited to the Arab League summit which was held in the Saudi city of Jaddeh on May 19. At the summit, al-Assad received a warm welcome and met with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the de-facto ruler of the kingdom.

The rapprochement between Saudi Arabia and Syria was a major blow to the efforts led by the United States, United Kingdom and European Union to isolate al-Assad.
