On July 3, the bullBSN account on Instagram posted a video showing U.S. military vehicles chasing after a Tiger armored vehicle of the Russian Military Police in Syria’s northeastern region.
In the video, several US M-ATV and MaxxPro MRAP (mine-resistant ambush protected) vehicles can be seen chasing after the Russian Tiger and trying to overrun it, but to no avail. One of the American vehicles allegedly lost a wheel during the race, according to the claims of Russians heard on the video. The dramatic video was filmed by someone aboard the Tiger, likely a soldier.
As for now, it remains unclear when or where the Russian-U.S. race took place. Usually, Russian and U.S. troops come cross each other on the M4 highway or on nearby road.
Earlier this week, the Reverse Side of the Medal channel on Telegram shared footage from a road accident between U.S. forces and Russian Military Police vehicles in northeastern Syria. The accident may be somehow linked to the race.
Russian and US forces follow a strict deconfliction mechanism when operating in northeastern Syria. Sometimes, however, violations are reported.
Last month, a US patrol approached the M4 highway in the northern countryside of al-Hasakah without giving a prior notice. The Russian Military Police quickly reacted by blocking the patrols’ path.
Compared to a full size MRAP vehicle most versions of the GAZ Tigr would be quite fast as they are light armoured vehicles. Claimed top speed on good surfaces is 140km/h.

This seems really immature behavior. Guess US soldiers trying to be provocative and/or intimidating by deliberately ramming into Russian vehicles – but to what strategic end? The Russians are motoring along in armored fighting vehicles too, so it’s really not going to impact them much at all! Those that are increasingly irrelevant or marginalized, often resort to childish and/or desperate measures to try and gain attention.
Its a low level war for territory and influence in Syria. More territory USA patrols in, the more influence and surveillance they have. In this video looks like the Russia vehicle is restricting the USA vehicle’s range of patrol. Looks successful if they damaged a wheel. Wit the other blocking incident looks the Russia are trying to reduce the USA range of patrol. Smart low level interference not giving USA a justification to escalate.
