The Russian-backed Syrian security operation against ISIS cells in the southern part of Daraa city, commonly known as Daraa al-Balad, is still ongoing.
On November 11, local fighters leading the operation advanced deep into the al-Sad street and managed to capture several positions of the terrorists. The Syrian military provided the fighters with fire support. Battle tanks, artillery and mortars targeted the terrorists and their positions.
Local fighters and former rebels launched the security operation with support from the Syrian military and intelligence on August 31. A ceasefire was declared on November 3 and 4 to evacuate civilians from Daraa al-Balad.
The operation was provoked by a suicide bombing that targeted the house of a former rebel commander in Daraa al-Balad. The commander, Ghassan Akram Abazid, survived the attack. However, four of his relatives and neighbors were killed. The attack was orchestrated by ISIS.
The 8th Brigade, a Russian-backed formation of the military’s 5th Corps that is mainly made of up local fighters and former rebels from the countryside of Daraa, have been leading the operation from the start.
According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the death toll from the security operation in Daraa al-Balad has risen to 18, including seven ISIS terrorists, six local fighters and five civilians.
The number of the remaining ISIS terrorists in Daraa al-Balad is unknown. The security operation in the city could go on for several more days, or even weeks.
