Syrian Forces Deploy Advanced Russian-made T-90 Battle Tanks to Aleppo Battle (Video)

A screenshot from the video

The Syrian military has deployed advanced Russian-made T-90 main battle tanks (MBTs) to western Aleppo, according to the video released on November 1.

T-90 MBTs were observed in the Minyan area where they were participating in operations against Jaish al-Fatah, a Jabhat al-Nusra-led coalition of militant groups.

Last weekend, elite units of the Syrian Army’s Tiger Forces and the Desert Hawks Brigade were deployed in Aleppo to counter the militants’ offensive operation to capture the al-Assad Military Academy and the nearby areas. Both formations operate T-90 MBTs supplied by Moscow over the last year.

In 2015, Russia delivered a batch of T-90 MBTs to the Syrian military in order to contribute to anti-terrorist operations across the country led by the Syrian Arab Army. In coming months, T-90 MBTs have showed themselves as an important factor at the Syrian battlefield. Let’s take a closer look at the Russian-made T-90 MBT.

It would be nice to see the Armata in Aleppo, carrying out an exercise drill.

John Whitehot

not really, tanks features cannot be fully appreciated in urban combat; the tanks deployed right now (T-72, T-90) can do the same job equally well. Moreover, Russia will never give Syria Armata tanks, it would need to train the crews, change logistics, etc etc. Equally improbable that they’ll deploy russian crews.

AMHants

I would still like to see the tank in service. No doubt along with many others.

John Whitehot

It will gradually replace the existing tanks in russian arsenals over the next few years. It’s logical to assume that the older T-72 and T-80 still in service will be the first to go in warehouses, and that a still significant force of upgraded T-90s and T-72s will remain in service for a while. Don’t forget the other vehicles of the family, like the kurganets and boomerang IFVs and Koalitsya SPG.

Cheers, I am just impatient and curious.

Agreed thats why they should have given them T55 am a modernized version. Upgrade a bunch, for the cost of T90 could have 5 or 6 T55 am. In Syria mainly used as mobile artillery and mobile pill box. A dozen T90 versus 48 T55 same price?

They should build some T55 with flame throwers. Excellent for Urban environment

John Whitehot

yes, it’s fundamentally true. They may employ T-90 because they are much more protected than older tanks against HEAT wraheads – we all have seen the vids of TOW hits on T-90s which failed to destroy the tanks. It must also be said that the ragheads have some tanks in Aleppo, and most are T-72. Tank warfare in urban areas is deadly as the engagement ranges are mostly very short. Modern tanks are made to kill other MBTs at ranges >2000-3000 meters, in cities you run around a corner to find an enemy MBT sitting there at maybe 50 or 100 meters. Needless to say, direct hits at such point blank ranges will destroy any existing tank, even Abrams, Leopard 2 and Challys. Also, the russians have developed several tank based vehicles specifically for urban fighting. They are based on T-55 and T-72 hulls, called BMP-T i think. I believe they could be effectively used in Aleppo, shredding infantry and atgm teams with their 30mm autocannons and thermobaric-head ATGMS.

I wonder why do they no not apply a desert camouflage.

John Whitehot
