Early on February 27, aircraft of the US-led coalition carried out strikes on Syrian government forces at the village of Salhiya in the province of Deir Ezzor, according to pro-government sources.
Then, pro-government sources claimed that government forces had reportedly responded with launching anti-aircraft missiles at the aicraft attacking their positions.
An unveryfied video even appeared online showing the alleged moment of the government forces’ response:

Does not work that way. It’s not just a toy that you can set and forget. You need the right placement, training and set up. First you need to secure the land and secure borders. Syria will be able to get the S-400 in about a year from now. But it will take 2-3 years for delivery and installation.
Delivery and installation is not a problem at all, but training is the important part which can take long time.
Delivery and installation IS the problem. Russia doesn’t have 100s of pcs of newest stuff sitting on the shelfs waiting to be shipped. It needs to be either made from scratch or heavily upgraded – both processes take time and production capability that Russia doesn’t have. In present circumstances Russian military industry produces few dozen brand new planes and upgrades similar numbers. Also they make a dozen SAM battalions worth of equipment for own use and export. If they start building staff today, I’m not sure they could rearm their allies in next few years – and USZios won’t be waiting for them…

I saw the video about the S400. It takes about 5 minutes to have it operational. The Pansrit is the forward deployed launchers that use the S400s radar. The 400 is a stand off system that of course needs to be secured but it will be set back 100-200 miles from hostilities. The Pansrit is the one close to action but it can be kept “silent” to operate. The real reason Russia is hesitating is to keep us(US) from having a “reason” to escalate this. We would like nothing better than to have a reason. We gave the eastern Euphrates to ISIS and then the Kurds while Syria had to fight their way to Deir Ezzor step by step. Kurds just got in their Toyota pickups and had a country drive from the north to the south. Heck US outposts were peacefully embedded inside ISIS controlled lands.
How many systems are in Syria? A battalion of each – 6 launchers per battery, 3 batteries per battalion times 2 should take on the combined AF of US, Israel and Saudi in a future conflict? What about Iran with it’s AD made in 1970s and Iraq and Lebanon without any. Do you even know how the stuff works? And have you any idea how efficient (or not) these systems are without proper fighter cover. Russian SAM systems in Syria are barely enough to deter IsraelTurkey attacks on Russian basis. Both Iran and Syria need a total overhaul of their AD and AF – dozens of new SAM batteries and fighter jets. To believe that S400 is a wonder weapon that can turkey shoot opposition assets at whim is not naive – it’s dumb…

Well in no place in this article it said that the IAF F-16I was shot down by a Pantsir System. It says that it was shot downed by a S-200. That was confirmed later by various sources, inclusive the IAF.

I suggest you read my post again I said once armed with manpads in worse case scenario SAA does not have SAM systems, the US planes HAVE TO FLY HIGH. That means if they fight like HEZBOLLAH or Houthis without easily zeroed in Armour, the planes cannot target the soldiers .
The foot soldiers with ATGM are even more powerful than the tanks as they cannot be targeted unlike useless tanks.
So even though Manpads are useless against US planes flying high, it stops them drop targeting the bare footed Houthis at low attitudes and no A10 can even come close with manpads.
That’s the main reasons why Hez and Houthis we’re able to do a lot of damage to the Israeli and Saudis in spite of both having the most modern planes.

I disagree! A manpad has a ceiling of 15,000 feet! Aircraft can fly more than double that and drop laser guided munitions! a Pantsir S-1 has an attack radius of just 20km so this isnt good enough either because the US can fire long range munitions from safe distances! The TOR-M1 has a height ceiling of only 20,000 feet and range of only 12km therefore also not useful! Only the BUK-M1,M2 or M3 (along with Syria’s existing S-200’s) can prevent such attacks! Syria only has about 10 of these systems and they are all guarding extremely high value targets! This is the exact systems u should be asking Russia to give the Syrian army! Other wise there are some Chinese options the Syrian MOD could purchase! But I have a feeling that Iran will soon be supplying Syria with such systems! For now the S-200 seems to be doing a good job perhaps because it may be plugged into the Russian high tech radar network! Such bombings occur rarely (although they are very bad) but do not alter the course of the war!

Russia should proliferate it’s hi tech hardware to it’s allies ASAP. The situation already turned into open and hot war with warring parties and front lines clearly defined. China and Iran should provide cash, Russia needs to build shit and export it – only not heavily downgraded models like they used to do, real top of the line stuff this time. Because, unlike in the 1960s and 70s Russia and it’s allies will be fighting US directly, not the proxies. But I agree with Wegan – production, delivery and training will take years. US and Israel know this , they made sure that all the countries on the list are unarmed and weak with years of UN sanctions and that’s why they’re in a hurry to fight now…
Well, I think USA try to bring Syria-Russia attention to this area rather than Ghouta area. Maybe USA-Israel-NATO have material or important stuff hidden in Ghouta, and they are very nervous about that.
