Syrian forces have taken full control of the district of Douma thus liberating the entire Damascus subrub of Eastern Ghouta from militants, Chief of the Russian Center for Reconciliation of the Opposing parties in Syria Yuri Yevtushenko announced on April 12.
“Today marked a landmark event in Syria’s history. The state flag was hoisted on the Douma building which signaled [Damascus’] control over this settlement and, hence, over all of Eastern Ghouta,” Yevtushenko said.
He added that units of the Russian Military Police will be deployed in Douma following its liberation to maintain law and order during its transitional period to come under control of the Syrian government.
On April 11, Yevtushenko revealed that about 4,000 militants and their family members had left the city during the past day. These militants surrendered over 400 pieces of weaponry, including large-caliber machine-guns, grenade launchers, sniper rifles and assault rifles. In total, over 3,354 members of Jaysh al-Islam and 8,642 members of their families had been evacuated from Duma district since the evacuation agreement was reached on April 8.
Since late February, over 165,000 people have left the Eastern Ghouta combat zone and at least 250 hostages held by militants have been freed.
Tne liberation of Douma and thus Eastern Ghouta is a key development for the military conflict in Syria. Now, Syrian forces will be able to free up a large number of troops and equipment that can be involved in the operations across Syria. The ISIS-held area of Yarmouk in southern Damascus and the militant-held parts of eastern and southern Syria are obvious targets of such oeprations.
Some experts say that this is one of the main reason behind the expected US agression against the Syrian government. This is just a way how the US leadership reacts to the shifting balance of power in the region.
