Syrian Foreign Minister Arrives In Algeria On Official Visit

Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad with his Algerian counterpart, Ahmed Ataf.

On April 15, Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad arrived in Algeria to meet with the Algerian leadership and discuss current international and regional developments.

The minister arrived at Houari Boumediene International Airport and was received by his Algerian counterpart, Ahmed Ataf, the Syrian Ambassador to Algeria, Namir al-Ghanim, and several other embassy staff and Algerian officials.

Consultations with Algeria have never been interrupted, Mekdad told reporters upon his arrival at the Algerian capital. The minister also highlighted the need to strengthen and develop bilateral relations between Syria and Algeria, according to the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency.

“The general role played by Algeria at all levels cannot be described. We are fighting on behalf of all the world against terrorism,” Mekdad said, stressing that Syria and Algeria should work together to face the current challenges.

Algeria was among the first countries to send humanitarian aid to Syria after the devastating February 6 earthquake, which claimed the lives of some 7,000 people in the country and more than 50,000 others in Turkey.

Mekdad’s visit to Algeria will last for three days and is part of a tour to several Arab states, including Tunisia, who recently restored relations with Syria, and neighboring Iraq. The tour is a part of ongoing efforts to strengthen ties with the Arab World.

Several Arab states, including Algeria, are currently working to reverse a 2011 decision to suspend Syria’s membership in the Arab League.
