Another military commander of al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the de-facto ruler of the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib, died on May 14 of wounds he sustained as a result of a recent attack by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA).
The commander, known Abu Dujana al-Baniyasi, was targeted by an FPV suicide drone near the frontline town of Kabani in the northern Lattakia countryside a few days earlier.
Al-Baniyasi was reportedly an explosive expert and a senior commander of engineering units in HTS’s Othman bin Affan Brigade. His nom de guerre suggests that he came from the town of Baniyas in the northern Tartus countryside on the Syrian coast.
The use of FPV suicide drones by the SAA was first documented last year. Syria reportedly received help from Russia who gained vast experience in mass producing and operating this type of drones following the start of the special military operation in Ukraine.
The SAA intensified drone strikes on Greater Idlib in recent months in cooperation with Russian forces in the country in response to ceasefire violations by HTS and its allies. The ceasefire in the region was brokered by Russia and Turkey more than four years ago.
In the last four weeks, the SAA eliminated four commanders in Greater Idlib, three from HTS and another from an allied Turkish-backed armed faction called the Sham Legion, using FPV suicide drones.
