You cannot just give Syria S-300 and expect itself to defend themselves against Israeli strikes. They need an integrated defence system. S-300 isn’t enough. The Pantsir systems are arguable the most advanced and effective short range defence systems with a 360 degree defence. The situation in Syria where Israel destroyed the pantsir system was because it was out of ammo. The great thing about these defence systems is that they are mobile and can be moved. Syria failed to do that.

Russia has faced no air or missile attacks, even during the height of tensions regarding Georgia in 2008 and Crimea in 2014. The U.S. trains to beat the S400 defenses of Kaliningrad yet doesn’t attack, or on Crimea either. U.S. planes stay out of Russia’s airspace. Israeli pilots don’t fly over Syria anymore, they attack from the Sea of Galilea or some mountain valley in Lebanon. No Israeli planes have challenged interior Syria since the S300’s became operational in Central Syria. And Israel has literally begged Russia not to allow them to be deployed around Damascus, and in the interests of good relations with Israel Russia has cooperated. If the Israeli armed forces don’t fly near them and don’t want them closer to israel’s borders I’ll bet they know something about these air defense weapons that you don’t: they’re deadly.

Shooting down missiles is a nice defense and all but in order to deter the attacks Syria has to impose a tax on Israeli attacks, namely downed airplanes. Until that happens Syria is vulnerable, especially around Damascus where the geography favors pop up and then escape tactics. Facing an integrated Russian air defense, manned by Russian personnel and reinforced by Russian aircraft would be a nightmare for Israel or the USA even. Whenever Russia has had enough of these Israeli pest attacks and send up a Su-35 to target pulse Israeli aircraft they hightail it home.

Russian Su-35’s have escorted Israeli aircraft away from Syria’s borders on at least five reported occasions. The Su-35 is more than a match for any aircraft in Israel’s airforce. No Jericho missile has ever shown a range like that. Not a single test, just a statement of capability. But, even so, so what? Israel might have a dozen of them, at most. Russia has hundreds of ICBM’s with proven reliabilty and ranges, in visible test launches. The jericho has no ability to evade ABM defenses and uses an obsolete linear ballistic trajectory which missiles such as the A-135 and the 40n6E can beat. As I noted before, the S-300 and S-400 remain unchallenged. Including in Venezuela, where they have kept the U.S. aircraft away. Israel used to bomb Syria weekly then made the mistake of hiding behind a Russian recon plane during one of these strikes and since then the strike rate has dropped to about 1.5 a month, averaged out. No Israeli aircraft appear over Syria now, they fire missiles some distance off and race for home. About half of these missiles are shot down. Syria has S-300’s they could use to defend Damascus with but Russia has forced Syria to keep them away from Damascus, at Israel’s urgent request. Israel kisses Russia’s ass, bringing President Putin to Israel to open up a monument to the defenders of St. Petersburg and Netanyahu flies to Russia frequently to beg for Russia’s forbearance and understanding which is why Israel gets away with occasional attacks on Damascus, which Russia tolerates as long as they don’t target Syria primarily or become gratuitous in nature. When Israel pushes too far, Russia clips Israel’s wings and Damascus goes quiet again for a few weeks or a month. That is the reality based view.
