On November 14, a civilian accused of collaborating with the Syrian intelligence survived an assassination attempt in the town of Rankos in the Eastern Qalamun Region.

The civilian, Hikmat Susaq, was reportedly shot multiple times by unidentified gunmen while he was on his way back from work in Ras al-Qaimah center. The man, who sustained serious wounds, was taken to a nearby hospital.

Opposition sources claimed that Susaq was working as an informant for the Syrian intelligence. However, no evidence was presented.

The sources revealed that Hikmat is the son of Muhamad Susaq, a rebel commander who was executed in the early years of the war. Muhamad was accused of cooperating with Hezbollah, which maintains positions in Lebanon’s territory a few kilometers north of Rankos.

This was not the first assassination to take place in Rankos. On November 7, a civilian named Adel Shahen was reportedly assassinated for cooperating with the Syrian intelligence.

Rankos was one of the al-Qaeda’s Nusra Front main strongholds near the Syrian capital, Damascus, during the early years of the conflict. In 2014, the town was cleared in a large-scale operation by the Syrian military and Hezbollah.

Earlier this year, the Syrian military and security forces eliminated a group of nine suspects in a security operation inside Rankos. The new attacks will not likely be tolerated by the authorities.
