Syrian Intelligence Officer Killed, Four Wounded In Another Attack Near Al-Golan Front

On April 16, a Syrian intelligence officer was killed and four others were wounded when unknown militants attacked a position near the front with the Israeli-occupied al-Golan Heights.

The militants opened fire from machine guns and launched rocket-propelled grenades at the intelligence position which is located on a road between the villages of al-Mushirafah and Ras al-Khualid in al-Quneitra countryside, just outside al-Golan buffer zone.

The position reportedly belonged to the Military Intelligence Directorate, specifically to the Front Intelligence Branch that is also known as Branch 220.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, which was the second to target Syrian troops on al-Golan Heights front in less than week.

Simultaneous explosions rocked two different checkpoints of the Syrian Arab Army near the town of Ghadir al-Bustan in the countryside of al-Qunitra on April 13. Initially, it was reported that the explosions were the result of a strike by the Israeli Defense Forces. However, it was confirmed later that the explosions were caused by improvised explosive devices. The attack killed a Syrian officer and left three soldiers wounded.

The recent attacks near the front were likely carried out by cells belonging to terrorist groups, like ISIS and al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, or by local operatives working for the Israeli intelligence.

In any case, the attempts to destabilize southern Syria plays in favor of Israel, which was recently attacked from the region.
