Syrian and Israeli intelligence officials have held a secret meeting, the UAE-based al-Arabiya al-Hadath reported on January 14.
The secret meeting, which was supposedly arranged by Russia, was held at Hmeimim Air Base in the costal Syrian governorate of Lattakia. The base is the headquarters of Russian troops in Syria.
Al-Arabiya Al-Hadath didn’t provide details on when the alleged meeting took place, who attended or what was the main purpose of it.
According to the news channel, this was the second secret meeting between Syrian and Israeli intelligence officials. The first meeting was held a while ago in Cyprus and was also arranged by Russia.
The report is highly questionable as it came amid high tensions between Syria and Israel. Earlier this week, a series of Israeli strikes hit military positions in the eastern Syrian governorate of Deir Ezzor. Dozens of Syrian and Iranian-backed fighters were allegedly killed. A senior Syrian intelligence officer was also injured.
In 2019, Israel recovered the remains of Zachary Baumel, a U.S.-born Israeli soldier missing since a 1982 tank battle against the Syrian Arab Army. Russia facilitated the recovery efforts. Several Syrian prisoners were released from Israeli jails in return.
While al-Arabiya’s report may be a mere propaganda stunt, it is possible that Russia is arranging Syrian-Israeli talks on specific matters like the prisoners, missing personnel issue.
Syria engaged in peace talks with Israel on a number of occasions before. The last round of talks, which was held in Turkey in 2008, saw some progress. However, it eventually collapsed.

I am not against it, I’d prefer to see us and Syria having a quiet border. However, them providing support to iran and Hezbollah is not something we can accept, if we can meet halfway then it would be for the best. Now, you can claim we’ve helped the opposition back then, but it was the right call as other Shia factions came too close like the Afghans and the Pakis. I have said it and I will say it again from a personal view as I were there, many IDF units at the border are ready for action if the order is given. The firepower that will be used is not something you can imgaine, I pity those who would have to withstand it.

It seems to me like Iran’s competition with Russia in Syria has taken a new turn. I’ve recently being reading the Russian blogosphere and I discovered to my surprise that Russians are increasingly seeing Iran as a competitor in Syria instead of an ally. As soon as Russia and the SAA moved to Deir-Ezzor, we see Israeli strikes targeting Shiite terrorists there. It’s like Russia has given Israel a free pass to bomb Iranian militias in Syria. From what this guy “Willing Conscience” has been saying here, it appears the Iran-allied militias in Syria are more concerned with cementing their hold over Syria than fighting ISIS. If that’s truly the case, then Russia has a big problem already. While Russia may not lose Syria to the rebels, it might lose it to Shiite terror militias of Iran. I’m pretty happy about the way the world has turned against Iran because of its destabilizing activities. And I’m pretty happy every time Israel bombs these Shiite bastards to hell. They magnify problems anywhere they set foot, despite suffering high losses themselves. Just like you mentioned in another comment, I think it’ll be better for Syria if Israel would launch a ground invasion near the border. It even gets if the invasion is coordinated with Russia. The Syrian Arab Army should be kept out of the way. Only Iran’s militias should be gutted in that region. If Russia and Assad do not intensify their efforts to get Iran’s militias out of Syria, they’ve lost this war already. Because even if the war ends right now, Iran’s militias will not lay down their arms, they won’t answer to the Syrian government, and they won’t absorb into the national army. It is possible that the present Iranian-Iraqi confrontation will deepen this polarization.

As I said I’ve had no prior knowledge of this development [it must’ve been very secretive], and I’m only using my knowledge of the past and current situation to come to the conclusions I have, and as I’ve been saying to all the pro Iranian trolls who’ve been hounding me lately, SF has given us 5 hidden messages over the last month, and they’ve all been anti Iranian messages. I’ve been telling all the pro Iranian trolls to be prepared for some more shocks from Russia, and judging by the absence of any comments from the usual suspects, I’m pretty sure they all got a big shock from this one. Where are you Arch Bungle. And to all the pro Iranian supporters, no I don’t hate Iranians, Persian people are no different to anyone else, but their religious Government is as bad as Isis in some respects, they may not chop off as many people heads as Isis do, but they’re just as oppressive to the people they rule, I’ve seen the way they’ve been treating their Syrian allies, and the way they’ve been making Russia’s life miserable in the south as well as Deir ez Zor [they used to in Aleppo too], so with friends like that who needs enemies, the sooner they leave the better.
