Germany should establish a no-fly zone over northeastern Syria after the upcoming withdrawal of U.S. troops in order to protect Syrian Kurds from any Turkish attack, Ibrahim Murad, a representative of the self-administration of North and East Syria in Germany, told Kurdistan 24 on January 2.
Murad added that Syrian Kurds are happy with a recent proposal by Roderich Kiesewetter, chair of the German parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, which included the establishment of a U.N. authorized no-fly zone over the areas held by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
“The German government should take [the proposal] seriously and we hope that it will use its relationship with the U.S. and others to achieve this,” the Kurdistan 24 news outlet quoted Murad as saying.
The self-administration has been promoting the idea of a no-fly zone over northeastern Syria since the White House announced the decision to withdraw U.S. forces from Syria. Last month, senior officials of the administration visited Paris and asked French officials to help establish the no-fly zone to deter Turkey.
Local observers believe that this idea is unrealistic as both France and Germany are allies of Turkey and cooperate with it in the framework of the NATO. Moreover, Russia will not likely allow the U.N. to adopt any plan that would threaten the territorial integrity and unity of Syria.
I guess Kurdish leaders feel the need to delude their followers while they send the own families to their new mansions and large bank accounts in Switzerland and laugh.
