Syrian Kurds to declare federal region in Syria

On Wednesday, a strong Syrian Kurdish political party named as the Democratic Union Party spokesman Nawaf Khalil said that his party has been planning to declare a federal region in northern Syria, the model which he said can be applied to the whole country.

He said to a western news agency that his party is not urging for an only-Kurdish region but an all-inclusive area which will include Turkmen, Arabs and Kurds in northern Syria.

It is also reported that at the end of a Kurdish conference that is being held in the town of Rmeilan in the country’s northern Hassakeh province today, a declaration is expected regarding this federalization plan.

When the Syrian government and Saudi backed rebels are in a peace talks with U.N. envoy at Geneva to resolve the Syrian crisis, that Kurdish political party expressed its political position.

Although previously, the Syrian government and the opposition reject any form of partitioning of the country.

“As a Syrian citizen, I say we reject talks about a federal Syria … our people will reject any attempt to divide Syria,” Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem said at a press conference in Damascus.

On Monday, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said federalization is option if Syrian people wants it. According to Lavrov, Russia will support whatever solution the Syrian government and the opposition formulate to end the country’s war, including “any form (of government) whatever it may be called: federalization, decentralization, unitary state.”

However, as a largest ethnic minority in Syria, Kurds are more than 10 percent of the country’s population of 23 million. Since the Syrian civil war, Kurds have been fighting several terrorists groups including ISIS to defend their territory, but Turkey is continuously putting political and military pressure on the ethnic group.
