According to pro-government sources, the Syrian military has deployed the 4th Armoured Division (more about the division here) and its special forces known as al-Ghaith Forces in Daraa city with the aim of stopping the advance of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and its allied US-backed Free Syrian Army (FSA).
On May 2, the HTS and its allies succeeded in capturing 40 buildings northeast of Al-Manshiyya district of Daraa.
Al-Ghaith Forces are considered among the elite forces in the SAA, characterized by their upgraded tanks with spaced and slat armor, as well as an active usage of Syrian-made heavy rockets Volcano and Elephant, and the use of the mine clearing system UR-77.
Al-Ghaith Forces succeeded in capturing Khan al-Sheih, Wadi Barada and recently the Qaboun district east of Damascus, where it didn’t fail in any mission assigned to it.
Meanwhile, Russian and Syrian air forces targeted HTS positions in Daraa city and in the town of Naima.
In early 2017, the SAA failed to repel the attacks of HTS and lost more than 90% of Minshyah district. However, it is expected that Al-Ghaith Forces will be able to repel the current attack and launch a counterattack to restore Al-Manshiyya and perhaps the entire Daraa city.
