On September 8, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) Tiger Forces and the Syrian Republican Guard (SRG) launched a military opeartion aimed at breaking the ISIS siege on the Deir Ezzor Airbase. The advance followed the government forces success in the village of Ash-Sholah.
Following the liberation of the Ash-Sholah goverment forces advanced on ISIS positions towards the Panorama roundabout located at the Sukhna-Deir Ezzor higway in southern Deir Ezzor.
Separately, the Tiger Forces and the SRG advanced on ISIS positions in the cemetery area near the Tharda Mount from the direction of the 137th Brigade Base Some 8 ISIS members were killed in the clashes in the area.
The SAA and the SRG advance came after an intense air and artillery bombardment campaign. Syrian warplanes have destroyed at least 2 ISIS vehicles west of the 137th Brigade Base, accoridng to pro-government sources.
Photos from the 137th Brigade Base area also show that at least two Russian-made BM-27 Uragan self-propelled multiple rocket launcher systems had been deployed to support the anti-ISIS operation.
The BM-27 Uragan is a heavy self-propelled multiple rocket launcher system with the effective firing range of 35 km and the calibre of 220 mm.
