Radical militants used an anti-aircraft missile to shot down the Su-22 warplane on August 14, Syria’s Defense Ministry announced.
“One of our warplanes, which was tasked today 14-8-2019 with a mission to destroy headquarters of the al-Nusra Front in the area of al-Tamanah, was subjected to a hit with an anti-aircraft missile launched by the terrorist organizations stationed in that area, as a result it was shot down,” a statement by the ministry reads.
Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham [previously known as the al-Nusra Front] and its allies from the “al-Fatah al-Mubin” operations room claimed responsibility for the downing of the warplane, saying that their “air defense companies” brought it down.
The warplane pilot, identified as Lt. Col. Mohammed Ahmed Suleiman from Deir Ezzor, was captured by HTS militants following a six-hour long search operation.

Idlib militants are known for possessing several types of MANPADs, including Soviet-made 9K38 Igla and Chinese-made FN-6 missiles.
Last month, a Su-22 was hit with a MANPAD over northern Hama. However, the experienced pilot was able to land safely in an unspecified airbase in Homs.

Except I do not believe one US military aircraft has been shot down with a MANPAD (Stinger) in Afghanistan. The Taliban have bagged some helicopters, but no fighters, bombers, or gunships have been shot down whereas the Soviets lost jets to Stingers. The Russians have not returned the favor by giving advanced anti-aircraft missiles to the Taliban.

1. The Syrian pilots should not bring their fighter jets lower than 6Km.
2. For precise target hits Syrian government needs target pods to fit in every fighter jets.
3. Similarly for bombs Syria needs smart kits to fit on every bomb.
China produces and sell these both products on very low cost. This will save pilots lives and fighter jets.
SU22 haven’t gps-oriented or tv-controlled missiles like the Kh-29T. So they have to divebomb ;) Very risky, but they need effectiv hits.. so they have to go in danger..

Rob, thank you for this, I was about to post something similar. We live in a Bluetooth world, there’s no reason for even an older combat plane not to have some laser guidance capacity by carrying a pod on one of the wings. The controls could be bolted on to anything in the cockpit. A 2 seater aircraft would be even more practical.

China is very helpful. A couple of times China sent officials to Syria and told to Syrian government that we can train Syrian army and we can meet Syrian hardware demands. just Syrian government should send request for these equipments.
Any idea why Assad didn’t go for the deal? Is it because the Chinese equipment is not compatible with the Russian equipment? Too much of a learning curve to try using two different manufacturers, two different languages?
I think in Assad government there is no technical person.
China from day one has supplied equipment to Syria, heaps of cash, and also helped train both military and medical personnel, but more importantly China’s invested tens of billions in Syria, mostly in the oil production sector but also in other sectors too, and they’ve also given lots of humanitarian aid to Syria. They even offered to participate in the Idlib campaign offering air support to the SAA, but nothing came of it because Erdogan and Putin came to an agreement and the Astana agreement was made.
So is Putin elbowing Xi out of Syria? I thought they shared strategic interests and were in accord with the Belt and Road initiative.
No he isn’t, they’re cooperating in Syria and just about everywhere else too. It’s all about resource security for China, they need petroleum for their industry and commerce, and more importantly for their war machine, everything China’s doing in the Middle East and Africa is all about resource security. The Russians already sell China tens of billions worth of gas and oil every year, but the Chinese don’t like putting all their eggs in one basket, so they’re madly trying to diversify their supply chains to minimise problems in the future. Now you’d probably think that Putin’s not happy that Xi isn’t buying even more oil and gas from Russia but he’s not, Putin’s very happy China’s stealing many of the US’s and Europe’s existing supply chains, because that’s driving up world prices for the two commodities Russia has the most of, oil and gas. They’re cooperating together to bring the US to it’s knees, the petrodollar is being made more and more worthless to the US economy thanks to what both XI and Putin are doing. And they’ve developed their own international monetary fund too, which is competing with the world monetary bank, which means the Chinese and Russians not only give out cheap loans to developing countries, they also broker commodity deals between some countries which purposely avoids using cash altogether, in other words they often revert to the age old tradition of barter, I’ll give you 10 chickens for 5 rabbits, type of deals. The world bank is losing business to China and Russia now, they can no longer rip off poor countries with their unrepayable loans, LOL. Neither Russia nor China ever go stepping on each others toes, and they actually seem to go to great lengths to avoid any conflict between them, so I suspect they haven’t got any conflicting interests in Syria at all, just mutually beneficial interests.

Along these years of Syrian war..SAA failed to protect his pilots….sometimes is too difficult…but in these case where the pilot was 6 hours hide…it was as simple as to be a GPS-Transponder to send position to SAA…and be monitored with drones and launch airstrikes vs incoming terrorist searching him!..sadly the fate of this pilot under hands of terrorist will be nothing good!

If Daesch refuses a prisoner exchange, Assad should inform Daesch that for every day they hold the pilot he will skin two Daesch prisoners and one Turk alive and televise the process so the other Daesch terrorists can see what awaits them if they mistreat captive SAA.
Terrible news, HTS will use this captured pilot to try and bargain now and God only knows what they’ll ask for. Hopefully Assad only agrees to prisoner exchanges and nothing else, give them 100 captured rebels for the pilot, even more if they want them, just don’t agree to any new ceasefires or a return of territory deals. God help the pilot.
