As a part of what appears to be a coordinated propaganda stunt, several Syrian pro-opposition news sources falsely reported late on January 21 that 20 Turkish service members were killed or wounded in the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib as a result of an attack by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA).
The sources said that the SAA struck a Turkish post near the town of Afes in the southern Idlib countryside, then went as far as claiming that the Turkish military dispatched medic evacuation helicopters to the region.
All of these claims were quickly denied by Turkish sources. SAA battle tanks did attack militants’ positions near Afes. However, the Turkish post was not hit and there were no casualties.
The failed propaganda stunt came following a series of attacks by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the de-facto ruler of Greater Idlib, and other al-Qaeda-affiliated group against the SAA.
The recent attacks were carried out to stir up tensions between Ankara and Damascus, who are currently engaged in Russian mediated talks. The failed propaganda stunt was likely meant to serve the same goal.
Ankara maintains a large force in Greater Idlib, supposedly to monitor a ceasefire that was brokered with help from Russia more than two years ago. Damascus wants the Turkish military presence in the region to end in order to resume ground operations against HTS and reopen the strategic M4 highway, which links the coastal city of Lattakia with Aleppo city.
HTS and its allies understand that a successful Turkish-Syrian rapprochement process will mark their end. So far, their attempt to sabotage this Russian-sponsored process have been limited to launching attacks against the SAA, and spreading fake news. However, in the future they could attempt to attack Turkish forces in Greater Idlib and blame the Damascus.
