A group of pro-government fighters went missing while conducting a combing operation in the western Deir Ezzor countryside, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on August 26.
According to the London-based monitoring group, the missing fighters are from the National Defense Forces and Liwa al-Quds, a Palestinian pro-government group. The fighters were tasked with securing the desert of al-Mayadin city from ISIS remnants.
“Contact was lost with the group’s fighters,” the SOHR’s report read.
The NDF and Liwa al-Quds dispatched a large force with dozens of vehicles to the western Deir Ezzor countryside to search for the missing group, whose fate is yet to be revealed.
ISIS terrorists are sneaking into western Deir Ezzor from their hideouts in the Homs desert. Earlier this month, Russian and Syrian forces conducted a large-scale operation in the desert. As a result, 327 terrorists were eliminated.
Hundreds of other terrorists are still hiding in the Homs desert. The terrorists are reportedly receiving support from U.S.-backed fighters in the nearby area of al-Tanaf.
The incident in western Deir Ezzor may be the result of communication failure. However, ISIS threat in the region is still alive.
