It’s a hard time to be a Turkish soldier in Syria’s Idlib. First, your government sends you to help al-Qaeda-linked militants. Second, you die and become a part of the Turkish propaganda campaign blaming the ‘Assad regime’ for agression.
Early on February 10, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda) and other Idlib al-Qaeda apologist groups launched an attack on positions of the Syrian Army near Saraqib in the province of Idlib. The attack was supported by Turkish rocket and artillery strikes, and Turkish troops deployed in the frontline area.
Despite the heavy Turkish support, militants have not achieved any notable gains in the battle against the Syrian Army in the Saraqib area. Nonetheless, something notable happened – at least 5 Turkish troops were killed and 5 others were injured in Syrian retaliatory strikes.
The Turkish troops were allegedly targeted at the Turkish ‘observation point’ near the Taftanaz Military Airbase. The same area were used by Turkish artillery forces to shell Syrian Army troops. The Turkish Defense Ministry already announced that its forces had immidiately destroyed targets involved in this ‘blatant act of agression’ against ‘peaceful supporters of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham members and their comrades.’

Meanwhile, Turkey’s foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu announced that there has been no consensus with the visiting Russian delegation so far regarding the escalating situation in Idlib. Indeed, it’s a bit hard to find consensus with the Russians when your troops are openly fighting side to side with al-Qaeda. The Turkish and Russian sides held the first round of talks on February 8. Then, they agreed that more talks were needed.
