Late on February 19, the Syrian and Russian air defense forces foiled a new drone attack on the Hmeimim Air Base in southern Lattakia. According to Syrian state TV, several “aerial objects” were successfully intercepted by air-defense systems over the coastal governorate.
Pro-government sources reported that the attack was launched from Greater Idlib, claiming that “long-range” rockets were also used in the attack.
Greater Idlib is controlled by the al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and several other terrorist group. The Turkish military maintains a fairly large force in the northwestern Syrian region.
The failed attack on the Hmeimim Air Base is an example of the threats posed by the remaining terrorists in Greater Idlib.
Last month, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and its allies launched a large operation to clear the entire region. However, Ankara is now threatening the army with military action if the operation continues.

It is the regular Turkish military that is staging these attacks and unfortunately they may get a lucky shot. The Russian response should be to increase the cost to the Turks by a more aggressive stance and also supplying its allies and Iran with better weaponry.

It’s almost like Russia and Syria are using these drone attacks as a pretext to push further into Idlib..a bit like how Turkey is using ‘civilian catastrophe’ as a means to conquer.

US strategy now is focused on trying to cause Russian casualties so as to discredit Russian military. They are using the Turkish military to attack the Syrian army and Russian bases. If Russia does not take an aggressive stance these attacks may result in casualties. The terrorists need to be cleared out of Syria at any cost.

Interesting thought. No doubt that the defeat of the attacks is a combined arms operation.
Of course, Russia has a lot of electronic, radars, satellites, and spy planes working on Syria land, that is why it is easy for them to detect any attack anywhere. They can see planes taking off from Israel, tracking their trajectories, and attacking Syria, for example.
