More escalation was reported in the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib as al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and its allies continue to launch attacks in violation of the ceasefire brokered by Russia and Turkey more than three years ago.
The Syrian Ministry of Defense announced on October 26 that the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) had carried out a series of strikes on the region in response to recent ceasefire violations.
In a statement, the ministry said that the artillery and air strikes targeted headquarters, ammunition depots and training camps of HTS and one of its closest allies, al-Qaeda-affiliated Turkistan Islamic Party, in the northern and western countryside of Idlib.
The strikes killed or wounded a “large number” of militants, according to the ministry, who listed the names of four slain militants.
A few hours after the release of the statement, a series of attacks with drones and rockets targeted government-held areas in the countryside of Lattakia, Hama and Aleppo.
The Syrian MoD said later that a total of eight armed drones were shot down by the SAA. However, four people, a soldier, two women and a small girl, were killed in the town of Rabiah in the western Hama countryside.

In response to the attacks, the SAA carried out a series of artillery strikes against positions of HTS and its allies in different parts of Greater Idlib, including the city center.
One of the strikes severely wounded HTS mediaman Mohamad Othman, who is infamous for covering HTS rocket attacks on government-held areas. According to activists in Greater Idlib, Othman lost one of his eyes and several other body parts. He remains in a critical condition.
On October 27, the VKS carried out more airstrikes against targets of HTS and its allies in response to their attacks. The strikes hit the towns of al-Fatatra in the southern Idlib countryside, Kabani in the northern Lattakia countryside and Sammaniyah in the northwestern countryside of Hama.
The escalation in Greater Idlib began following a drone attack that targeted the annual graduation ceremony at the Syrian Military Academy near the central city of Homs on October 5. The attack claimed the lives of 89 civilians and service members and left more than 277 other wounded.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the drone attack. However, evidence indicates that HTS or one of its allies was responsible.
