On January 18, the Syrian Arab Air Force (SyAAF) and the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) intensified their airstrikes on the outskirt of Aleppo city.
According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), Syrian and Russian warplanes carried out more than 21 airstrikes on the city’s western and southwestern outskirt.
The Beirut-based al-Mayadeen TV said that at least three Russian and Syrian airstrikes struck positions of al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) in the town of al-Mansura.
The SyAAF and the VKS initiated their attack on terrorists’ positions near Aleppo city two days ago. Pro-government activists claim that these airstrikes are a part of ongoing preparations to launch a large-scale operation to secure the city’s outskirt.
In the last few weeks, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) amassed a large strike force in Aleppo. In spite of this, no ground attack has been launched, so far.

The next major SAA offensive may just break their resolve into accepting US bananas. Most have at least one defeat and surrender to their credit already. Idlib is the dumping ground for the hardliners and the indoctrinated and desperate who just won’t see sense. Quite soon the monkeys won’t even have a tyre to swing on.
I’m all in favour of a quick end to the war but these airstrikes around Aleppo are starting to kill way too many civilians, and apart from the fact that innocent lives are being lost unnecessarily, the UN is watching and could intervene if things get out of hand, which isn’t what we want. And Erdogan isn’t happy at all, which normally I’m quite happy to hear about, but this time he’s making threats that don’t bode well for this Aleppo campaign or the rest of Syria.

Speaking at an inauguration ceremony in Istanbul, Erdoğan said Turkey now considers the security of its southern border not merely in border provinces of Mardin, Şanlıurfa, Gaziantep, or Hatay but further afield. “We are determined to use all means of politics, diplomacy and military power in issues concerning Syria, the Mediterranean and Libya,” Erdoğan said.”

Concentrating on southern Idlib is the best way to avoid annoying Erdogan or the UN, the civilians there are less vulnerable to accidental airstrikes and artillery fire than they are in Aleppo, so I think this is where the SAA and SAAF should be launching any future campaigns, leave Aleppo until more of the south is liberated, that way if Turkey or the UN do decide to intervene, Assad will at least control all the south when and if they do.
